Josh had a febrile seizure last night

Wow, even now as I write that, it doesn't seem real!

We went to Matthew's school last night since they had a Family Fun
Carnival and Chris was off. We picked Chris up after work and got
there for five thirty. At this point, Josh seemed a teeny bit warm
but I chalked it up to his teething (he is cutting more molars) and
since his cheeks were flushed and he wasn't eating very much, it
seemed to fit his normal pattern of teething behaviour.

He was really clingy the whole time, kind of sleepy and cuddly so I
carried him all over the school while Chris and the kids
participated in the events.

He seemed to be getting warmer so we decided to cut the evening
short and get the kids ready to go home but Matthew really wanted to
go to a maze they had set up so Chris and I decided that he would
take Josh out to the van since I had already got him dressed at that
point and I would take the kids to the maze. I took the kids to the
maze and when we got out we went to wait at the front door for Chris
with the van. Matthew said, "Why are we waiting here, Daddy is in
the gym?" I told him no, that his dad was getting the van with Josh
but Matthew insisted and told me to look in the gym. I looked over
and saw Chris with a bunch of people around him. He screamed at me
to get over there and I came over kind of annoyed that he screamed
at me in public. Then he says, "He went into shock." and I looked
over on the tables they had set up to see Josh, half naked with a
bunch of people around him. All I could say was, "What?" I just
went over to him as fast as I could and tried to get him to stay
awake as he was listless and wouldn't open his eyes, not to mention
burning hot.
The teachers and other parents (one was a health worker of some
kind) started putting ice all over him to help him cool down
faster. He started responding but he still wouldn't open his eyes
and he was mostly still limp so they called 911. The paramedics got
there pretty quickly and started to assess him. They said his
oxygen saturation levels were excellent (99) and that his heart rate
was good as well. The gave him some air from the oxygen mask and
checked his blood sugar with a pin prick on his foot. He responded
by letting out an annoyed cry and everyone took that as a good
sign.
His temperature started to go down slowly but they wanted to take
him to Children's to get thoroughly checked out. So off we went in
an ambulance. Chris took the kids and went to pick up my brother in
law to watch them while I rode with Josh. I could tell Josh was
improving when I asked him if he wanted to watch Curious Buddies and
he did his usual caveman grunt of, "Ahhhh" His temp. kept
decreasing back to normal and by the time we reached Children's he
was fine.

When he got examined, they noticed his throat was a bit red but they
did blood tests and nothing came back abnormal.

So now today, Josh is back to his old self again. Eating, getting
into thing he shouldn't and being generally adorable.

I feel so badly for Chris because he was the one who saw Josh have
the seizure. He said that he was taking him to the van and he
noticed Josh was moving a bit funny as he was carrying him. Then
just before they reached the van, Josh let out kind of a scared cry
and then he started to shake. Chris put him in his seat and Josh
went rigid and clamped his jaws together. Chris managed to pry them
open a bit to see if he was choking on anything and then he
remembered back when Matthew had pneumonia last summer and he read
up on high temps and possibility of seizure. That made him decide
to take him back into the school and start stripping him down. He
was kind of freaked and didn't think he was doing things fast enough
so he called for someone to help and thankfully someone there was
able to take over and that's when I came into the gym.

I am shaking as I type this now because I think it is finally
sinking in as to how scary that was! Especially for Chris For
me, I just developed tunnel vision about it and kept focussing on
keeping Josh awake and later comforted.

Whew! All I have to say is that my kids are too dramatic and that
Matthew had better not feel left out being the only one of the kids
not to ride in an ambulance!

Take care,
Anita
