I think four hours is a lot for preK --but it depends on what kind of stuff you are doing (as long as he's having fun that's awesome!). I have a hard time keeping count of the hours of hard core school. For us, as long as the TV is off, learning, creating etc just happens on its own.

DD can play learning games on the computer, design her own art progects, reading/math skills while helping me cook, writing shopping lists while having an imaginary shopping trip with her sister etc. We schooled through the summer and are still working ahead in just about every subject. This month we've been very laid back too.
