Report cards again!

They finished up their second nine weeks and report cards came home yesterday. I guess I didn't realize this but... Their "grades" at the end of the 9 weeks doesn't reflect the culmination of their work over the course of the 9 weeks. It's literally just what they got on the final test at the end of the 9 weeks. If you miss a question on the test, that's it, that's your grade. Does that seem a little screwed up to anyone else??? Anna got straight 100s in everything except sequencing, where she got an 89. I looked over the sequencing test and it was a cut and paste thing of 20-some pictures. She got two of them out of order and then corrected them (you could see where she peeled them off of the paper and glued them back on). They counted that against her (not saying that they shouldn't have, though she DID recognize her mistake... Just sayin'...) and now her entire grade reflects that. It doesn't show that every single freaking paper she brings home is absolutely perfect, no, it shows that she got two wrong on the final test and obviously didn't learn 100% of the material. BOGUS. Not to mention, I feel like the "homework" we do every freaking night should count for something on that report card but it doesn't. Soooo, why do we spend half an hour hunting through magazines looking for words and pictures that start with the letter of the week?

Regardless, she did great in everything, Exceeded Expectations in every "extra" class except PE where she just Met Expectations, and we were very sure to tell her how proud we are of her.

that does seem messed up. I know the teachers at my school are required to have two grades per week per subject and they base their final grade on that.

That is very odd. I wouldn't want to be given grades based on that and I wouldn't want my boys to be graded like that.

That's pretty dumb. Do they get grades, like A B C D...? Kayleigh get's M's, and some other letters that I can't remember right now, lmao!

We haven't got our newest report card yet. I think the semester ends in late January.

Wow that seems odd to base the entire grade on one test.

We go on a trimester schedule so I think sometime in Feb is the end of the 2nd trimester, I think in like 2 weeks we get a progress report though.

We have below grade lvl, approaching grade lvl, at grade lvl, and above grade lvl. Of course they don't report ANYONE above grade lvl on the 1st report card which I have big issues with. So my already reading at 2nd+ lvl and doing math at 3rd grade lvl K student is only AT grade lvl on his report card.....

I'm sure it won't be reflected on her Ivy league school applications. Lol. Danny's school is similar. They "test" the kids at the end of each quarter in K & some in 1st. I guess they think that is best at this level? I understand the frustration.

Aiden's school does it the same way. He writes his name fine all along and then goofs off when it's testing time and gets a low grade for that. Meanwhile he's being pretty extensively tested for giftedness.

Seems odd that they give grades in K. Or even tests in K, in the traditional sense. That seems messed up.

It's all part of 'No Child Left Behind". Dumb for sure, especially considering Kindergarten isn't even mandatory (in Illinois, at least!)!

Our schools get U, NI, S, E through 2nd grade, and at 3rd grade get letter grades. I am not sure what it is based on, seeing Saphyre got A's and B's, and has been struggling, but doing better since we got her on meds. She has ADHD and was having a really hard time.

They don't get "letter grades" in kindergarten, they literally only get percentages in the different areas. Here's how it reads.

BASIC SKILLS
Recites Address: 100
Recites Birthday (M/D/Y): 100
Recites Phone Number With Area Code: 100
Ties Shoes: 100

HANDWRITING
Writes and Recalls Capital Letter (these are only the ones covered in this 9 weeks mind you): 100
Writes Entire Name From Memory: 100 (???)

MATH
Can Make ABC Pattern: 100
Counts Objects to 31 (seems a little arbitrary to me): 100
Identifies 6 Shapes: 100
Identifies Numbers Covered In 9 Weeks: 100
Writes Numerals Correctly: 100

READING READINESS
10 Color Words: 100
Capital Letter Recognition: 100
Letter Sound Recognition: 100
Rhyming Words: 100
Sequencing: 89

ART: EXC
PHYSICAL EDUCATION: M
MUSIC: EXC

Remember when it was all "Language Arts" and "Check Plus" and "S+"? Is that too easy???

Ah, so not grades really. They're more like test scores.
