Caleb Had In-School Suspension Today :( - Yada, Yada, Yada

I'm so disappointed in Caleb. He punched another kid today, broke the kid's glasses (although I think they were easily repaired), and got sent to the office. The principal then sent him to be with the in-school suspension teacher (an older man the kids all adore so I'm kind of worried he'll enjoy being there). Caleb is not a mean, aggressive kid. He's aggressive in that he's socially immature and will pick and invade others' spaces and can be mouthy but he's not aggressive in a physically hurtful way. I can imagine him punching someone if the kid was bothering him or provoking him, which he's told me several times that this kid does things that bother him or picks on him. I'm not making excuses for him and wish he'd control himself better, but I'm not sure if I'm happy with the education he's getting. I love his teacher, her attitude and gentleness with the kids. But I think they do a lot of seatwork, and I don't think they get adequate recess time to get out their physical behaviors, although I think this incident probably happened in the gym at recess.

Oh no! How long does he have to be in ISS? I didn't know they even had ISS for kids this little. Is there any way you can talk to the teacher about the other kid? Not to make excuses for Caleb, of course, but just to try to minimize their contact with each other? It's so hard to explain to a child to ignore someone who's bothering them. That takes a lot of self-control. I remember that from when I was a kid!

OH hun, ((hugz)) during this dificult time, right now I am in the same boat. No kids do not get enough activity and it makes them antsy and aggrssive, and bored!!! I have sat in my son's class, I have seen the curriculum. The teacher does alot of talking and loses the kids interest long before she stops talking. The no child left behind program that was started in 2000 nation wide (some schools do not adhere from what I am told) was the worst thing they have come up with. Do some research and you will see the problems with all the sudying and no time for them to be KIDS!!! I hope it does not continue for you.... I will pray for ya, please do the same for me

The suspension was just one day. I asked him what happened after school, and he said he couldn't remember what happened. He said he had fun with Mr. Hardy and they played checkers. He didn't look well though. He looked like he'd been crying. He said he wasn't, so maybe he was just tired. Then he finally said Nick was teasing him, he told the teacher, and Nick still didn't stop, so he punched him. Nick told the teacher Caleb punched him, and with the broken glasses, Mrs. Bray sent him and Nick to the office. At the principal's office, Nick did all the talking. Caleb told me he didn't want to interrupt Mr. Kahrs so he never told him Nick was teasing him. I let him know he needs to never hit people no matter what they are doing to him and to next time just go stay by the teacher for awhile instead.

poor guy!!!! So well mannered not to interupt! I would be proud momma, and I am sure he realizes what he did was wrong

I get that line all the time. Sometimes I really wonder if they even know what they do???

Hopefully that was a one time only thing. Maybe that boy won't bother Caleb anymore for fear of getting hit again. I know it isn't good to fight but it might have solved the problem.

Yikes...good luck. Don't know what else to say. I have my hands full too at times. Katie is the class clown. Hate to ruin her spirit, but curb her behavior. What are you going to do?

Katie too doesn't remember what she does wrong. She gets yellows at times, never reds. When I ask what happened, instant amnesia!! But tell them you are baking cookies after school...see if that is forgotten!

Sounds like he (and you!) had a rough day. Sounds like you handled it great though. Hopefully it won't happen again. That's cute about not wanting to interrupt the principal. Collin has amnesia when it comes to school too. I can barely get anything out of him on what he did during the day. Usually it's "I can't remember."
