Josh had a febrile seizure last night

Wow, even now as I write that, it doesn't seem real!

We went to Matthew's school last night since they had a Family Fun
Carnival and Chris was off. We picked Chris up after work and got
there for five thirty. At this point, Josh seemed a teeny bit warm
but I chalked it up to his teething (he is cutting more molars) and
since his cheeks were flushed and he wasn't eating very much, it
seemed to fit his normal pattern of teething behaviour.

He was really clingy the whole time, kind of sleepy and cuddly so I
carried him all over the school while Chris and the kids
participated in the events.

He seemed to be getting warmer so we decided to cut the evening
short and get the kids ready to go home but Matthew really wanted to
go to a maze they had set up so Chris and I decided that he would
take Josh out to the van since I had already got him dressed at that
point and I would take the kids to the maze. I took the kids to the
maze and when we got out we went to wait at the front door for Chris
with the van. Matthew said, "Why are we waiting here, Daddy is in
the gym?" I told him no, that his dad was getting the van with Josh
but Matthew insisted and told me to look in the gym. I looked over
and saw Chris with a bunch of people around him. He screamed at me
to get over there and I came over kind of annoyed that he screamed
at me in public. Then he says, "He went into shock." and I looked
over on the tables they had set up to see Josh, half naked with a
bunch of people around him. All I could say was, "What?" I just
went over to him as fast as I could and tried to get him to stay
awake as he was listless and wouldn't open his eyes, not to mention
burning hot.
The teachers and other parents (one was a health worker of some
kind) started putting ice all over him to help him cool down
faster. He started responding but he still wouldn't open his eyes
and he was mostly still limp so they called 911. The paramedics got
there pretty quickly and started to assess him. They said his
oxygen saturation levels were excellent (99) and that his heart rate
was good as well. The gave him some air from the oxygen mask and
checked his blood sugar with a pin prick on his foot. He responded
by letting out an annoyed cry and everyone took that as a good
sign.
His temperature started to go down slowly but they wanted to take
him to Children's to get thoroughly checked out. So off we went in
an ambulance. Chris took the kids and went to pick up my brother in
law to watch them while I rode with Josh. I could tell Josh was
improving when I asked him if he wanted to watch Curious Buddies and
he did his usual caveman grunt of, "Ahhhh" His temp. kept
decreasing back to normal and by the time we reached Children's he
was fine.

When he got examined, they noticed his throat was a bit red but they
did blood tests and nothing came back abnormal.

So now today, Josh is back to his old self again. Eating, getting
into thing he shouldn't and being generally adorable.

I feel so badly for Chris because he was the one who saw Josh have
the seizure. He said that he was taking him to the van and he
noticed Josh was moving a bit funny as he was carrying him. Then
just before they reached the van, Josh let out kind of a scared cry
and then he started to shake. Chris put him in his seat and Josh
went rigid and clamped his jaws together. Chris managed to pry them
open a bit to see if he was choking on anything and then he
remembered back when Matthew had pneumonia last summer and he read
up on high temps and possibility of seizure. That made him decide
to take him back into the school and start stripping him down. He
was kind of freaked and didn't think he was doing things fast enough
so he called for someone to help and thankfully someone there was
able to take over and that's when I came into the gym.

I am shaking as I type this now because I think it is finally
sinking in as to how scary that was! Especially for Chris For
me, I just developed tunnel vision about it and kept focussing on
keeping Josh awake and later comforted.

Whew! All I have to say is that my kids are too dramatic and that
Matthew had better not feel left out being the only one of the kids
not to ride in an ambulance!

Take care,
Anita

OMG Anita--I am so sorry!! I can tell you that I know first had how scary that is, as I'm sure I told you that Jenna had one on the 4th of July this past year. Poor Chris having to deal with that, and with all those people around-but he's a great dad and I'm sure he did a super job--and I'm so glad to hear that Josh is doing great today (isn't it amazing how they can scare the complete crap out of us and then be fine the next day?! grr!) If you're anything like me, anytime Josh is warm now he will be naked! (if Jenna even looks rosy cheeked anymore, we strip her down--paranoid parents!)

I wish I could hug you--I'm sorry you had to deal with that--it's awful.

Much love to all of you!!!!!

How scary! I'm so glad Josh is ok now.
It's probably good that you were at school when it happened and that
people knew what it was and how to treat it and call for help and all that.
Even though I've heard of febrile seizure, I'm not sure I wouldn't
be in a total panic if it happened to us!

Re: Josh had a febrile seizure last night

Hi guys

Thanks so much for all your love and concern.

OMG! Steph-I totally forgot about what happened to Jenna! Now I totally remember you telling me on the phone and I remember how freaked out I was for you guys! How funny, little did I know eh?
I felt your hug right through what you wrote

Yeah, apparently he is now 30% more likely to have one happen again. So we will have to be like Mike and Steph and watch him like a hawk.

Steph-let me know if you can get on Yahoo tonight. I really need to empty my head about this

Thanks again guys for all the love-you are awesome!

Take care,
Anita

Re: Josh had a febrile seizure last night

WOW! I am here crying just thinking about the emotions you went through. Brad's brother had febrile seizures as a child and it always scared me that Kayla would due to the genetics. We've been blessed thus far but- as you can attest to- things can happen when you least expect it.

Sending love and hugs your way!

p.s. keep Tylenol on hand "just in case"... sorry, the nurse in me had to speak up!

Re: Josh had a febrile seizure last night

How scary! I'll never forget my nephew having one when he was a baby. He's 18 now, but when he was a baby, he and my sister had gone out of town to the mall with my parents and me. On the way home, he spiked a fever and had a seizure. We were about 20 minutes from town, and my dad drove like crazy to get him to a hospital. It freaked us out so bad!

How scary for all of you! Gosh, they can get sick sooooo fast. I'm so sorry that happened. Those febrile seizures have been one of my greatest fears as a parent. I'm glad he seemed to have recovered so quickly.

Re: Josh had a febrile seizure last night

WOW that can be so scary. I am glad things are good now and he is feeling better.

I guess I was a nervous mommy. When Katie would get sick with high fevers, I always had her in bed with me, just so I could monitor her temp more. When she would run a fever, she always ran high ones.

I swear, with all the scares these little ones give you, they take time off your life, one day at a time.

Re: Josh had a febrile seizure last night

Wow Anita - I would have been petrified!! Justin gave me a horrible scare when he turned blue and passed out and the day care called me saying he wasn't breathing! Turned out he was one of those kids who had breath-holding spells when he got upset, but man, I remember that feeling of pure terror!!! I am so glad everything worked out and that's what it was. Sounds like you both handled it great but tunnel vision, while great at the time (gut instinct - think of nothing else and save my child!!) don't be surprised that now that it's all over, you let it all out! Great job Mom (and Dad!)
