Kindy and homework...

Becca has gotten homework here and there on occasion. Sight word ring, read 3 books then pick your fav part and illustrate and tell about it (they get a coupon for a free personal pizza each time) and so on...review sight words, phone number and address.
NOW she seems like she will have homework every nite (which is fine) so im wondering if other kindergardeners have always had homework, have no homework or just started?
Last nite she had to read a book (they bumped her up to the next level), a math sheet, review sight words, phone # and address...her teacher said they will have 15 to 20 min of homework every nite now...

Re: Kindy and homework...

Josh now has homework 4 nights a week. At first it was just occasionally. Now they have one night of writing and one night of math work, one night of reading and then writing a sentence and drawing a picture, one night of drawing a picture of a current event in his life and writing a sentence

Re: Kindy and homework...

I checked "other" because I'm not sure if what Sara does counts as "homework". Every once in a while she has a project due. She usually gets a couple of weeks to work on it. The most recent one was to glue 100 things to a paper vest (for the 100th day of school). Also, she brings a reading book (different from a library book) home twice a week and has a couple of days to read it and fill out a little chart about how she liked it. That's it as far as take-home work.

Re: Kindy and homework...

Amaya is given homework every Monday, to be brought in by Friday. One sheet is math/patterns, & the other is phonics/letters/reading. She has had homework since the beginning of school.

Ditto here. Every Monday, he gets a homework packet and he returns it the following Monday. It's usually coloring something (color by numbers or color everything that starts with an "a" green, stuff like that), writing his name to practice penmanship, practicing letters or numbers also for penmanship, and we're supposed to read to him for 15 minutes a night and write down the name of the book we read and how many pages we read. Since I started working full-time, I have to admit that we are awful at getting it all turned in on time.

Re: Kindy and homework...

Wow...I'm surprised at how much homework everyone gets. At the beginning of the year, we got a list of the different grades and how much homework they get a week. Some of you are getting what the older grades get. Kindergarten gets 10-15/minutes of work a week.

On Tuesday/Wednesday, he gets a practice writing sheet. Whatever letter is the letter of the week. He has to pick his show 'n tell or create it once a week. Every now and then, he'll have something extra to do but it's not much. Oh and now they added for extra, a riddle of the week but I don't think that's an actually assignment. I think it's bonus.

Re: Kindy and homework...

Katie gets homework monday thru thursday!! This has been since the first week of school too. Last week I got pissed she had so much in 1 night. One more night of that and I am going to talk to the teacher.

I'd like to know again who has full time kindy?

We are full time kindy. Get picked up at 8, school starts 8:40 and she is done at 3:10. That is a long day for Katie, she comes home so tired...this, the girl with unending energy!!!! Then after working all day in school, homework everyday!!!! We get the list monday and I try to get her to do as much as possible...so that she can have play dates other days. Other wise it gets crazy. She DISLIKES school (having too much work she says, but loves her friends!!)and I don't blame her!!!! Every night I hear, "Do I have school tomorrow mommy?" I let her have playdates tues, wed and fri. It sucks.

Re: Kindy and homework...

The best thing about Ayra's school, she doesnt get homework ever!!
They do everything in school 8am,-3.30pm

She has personal workbook time with me at home now and she's loving it.I dont think she's missing out on all the homework because she's doing fine in her subjects in school

I love the idea of not having homework because when she starts Year 1 I bet she's gonna have tons of homework....

Judy, Darren has full time kindy and we have homework M-F. It is always reading a book every night, but occasionally there will be other items scattered in with the book.

Don't get too mad. The teacher might be required to give a certain amount. Also, once Katie gets a little older she will need to do it on her own, so setting up a homework structure now will benefit her in the longrun. Also, if she see's that Mommy is put out with so much work, then she may feel the same too ( I don't know if you're complaining in front of her or not)

As she gets older your requirement is supposed to be less and less, of course, many parents do their children's homework for them, and that is a whole other story and I don't want to soapbox at this time of the morning.

Re: Kindy and homework...

We have FT here too. Josh gets on the bus at 7:30 and gets off the bus at about 3. He has homework 4 days a week, they give the assignments on Monday for the week. It is not too labor intensive and some nights we do more than one nights worth because one assigment doesn't take long.

Re: Kindy and homework...

I chose other, because like Erin I'm not sure if it constitutes homework. Hanna has a book to read, we keep it for a couple days and then send it back for a new one. They make sound games in school that they want us to play at home. It's just fun stuff. Sometimes they send home a "family" project, like making an ornament for their holiday tree. But no she doesn't get worksheets to do that have to go back. There will be enough of that later, IMO!!

Re: Kindy and homework...

I'm still shocked over the amount of homework. Lucas is in half day kindy. Indiana is one of the last states to still have 1/2 day kindy. But they're trying to change that.

Re: Kindy and homework...

I put other because at Alex's last school (before we moved) he had homework pretty much every night (except friday). It was usually something like read a book to me or write in his journal. Sometimes it was math etc. However, since switching schools (and going into french immersion) he hasn't had any homework yet. I asked his teacher about it...thought maybe she was afraid us non french speaking parents would get the kids mixed up lol. But she said she'll be sending stuff home soon. I work on his english reading with him though on my own

Re: Kindy and homework...

Every Friday Emily gets a homework packet that is 7 pages total (like the ones all of you have described) that is due the next Friday. So technically 1 page per night. BUT, I/we don't beleive she should do it on weekends (not at age 5), so she does it Mon.-Thurs. right after school. This has been since week 1 of Kindy.

Re: Kindy and homework...

We get homework every night. Our packet comes home on Monday & is due on Friday. We do not have homework over the weekend. The homework usually consists of about 2 pages per night. The nice thing about the packet is that if I know we have soewhere to go one night and won't be home until late, I can have Jordyn do extra homework the night before to compensate for the night we are out. This works so well for us! Jordyn has had homework since the second week of school.
