How many hours do you work with your kids daily? (homeschooling)

Just curious, Right now all I have is Logan and he does PreK work and I find I am doing actual work for only about 4 hours a day, now of course we have lunch and games and other projects, but the actual hard core learning is only 4 hours and wanted to know if this is the norm for everyone? I will have James home in January and I keep thinking, he will prolly only be truly hitting the books for that short amount of time? am I doing something wrong? any advice would be great!

Re: How many hours do you work with your kids daily? (homeschooling)

I often worry that we don't do enough hard core learning here but I think it really is just what your gut feeling is telling you. We are lucky to get 3 hours in and if you ask me you are doing really well with 4. Also remember that everything the family does is a day is considered learning! I've read articles before about how public school children only get the average of 3 hours daily anyway but I'd love to hear what anyone else has to say on this subject too....

Re: How many hours do you work with your kids daily? (homeschooling)

Thanks for the response, I thought I was doing something wrong, I also read that since we have a "small classroom" work goes faster than in a room of 20 kids, so I am seeing 3-4 hours as the norm. but yes I am curious as to other responses as well

Re: How many hours do you work with your kids daily? (homeschooling)

I think four hours is a lot for preK --but it depends on what kind of stuff you are doing (as long as he's having fun that's awesome!). I have a hard time keeping count of the hours of hard core school. For us, as long as the TV is off, learning, creating etc just happens on its own.

DD can play learning games on the computer, design her own art progects, reading/math skills while helping me cook, writing shopping lists while having an imaginary shopping trip with her sister etc. We schooled through the summer and are still working ahead in just about every subject. This month we've been very laid back too.

Re: How many hours do you work with your kids daily? (homeschooling)

Hi! I'm not a HS momma, but I am a public school teacher by trade (I SAH right now). While I'm not going to HS (officially, though I do a lot of guided activities at home right now b/c we all enjoy it) I can tell you in honesty that since you're doing 1:1 or 1:2 that your guided/direct teaching time can be a lot less and be just as effective. Four hours a day for preK is overkill, IMO. Not that it's BAD, but really not necessary. If you're both enjoying it and there is no frustration in either of you, that's fine, but again, not really necessary.

If I were HS and had to put a daily time frame on guided lessons, it would look like this (broken into 2 "sessions" per day as they get past KDG):

preK - maybe 15 - 30 minutes a day
K - 30 min - 1 hour
1st - 1 - 2 hours
2nd/3rd - 2 - 3 hours
4th/5th/6th - 3 - 4 hours
7th - HS - 4 - 5 hours

Then, add in whatever social extras you do as a HS family (zoo, museums, music lessons, dance, sports, etc...) and unguided time (independent reading, handwriting practice, educational computer time, free play, etc...) and you will have a well-rounded day in MUCH less time than the public school day b/c your classroom will be more efficient (I've always said that I'd LOVE to teach a class of no more than 10 kindergartners rather than the 20 I have had in the past! ).

Anyway, I hope I'm not butting in. I have toyed with the idea of HS, however at this point I will have to return to work FT in less than two years for the income, so HS isn't in the cards right now. We definitely will continue our supplemental activities though. GL with your journey!

Re: How many hours do you work with your kids daily? (homeschooling)

Thanks ladies!!! I have since cut it down to about 2 and a half hours because it became just repetition, we are actually working on letter sounds and phonics and after about 45 he is tired of it and I can't blame him, then its handwriting practice, math (simple addition), etc and it goes really fast. then add in art projects and things and our day this past week was averaging 4 hours total. I don't want to burn him out (public preK was 8 am -245 pm and I think it was too much) but I don't want him to be behind for Kindergarten next year. still talks on if he will stay home or go public school, not sure, everything is up in the air, my 7 year old would like to stay in the public school system, and I am not thrilled with the idea, but DH insists it's better for him to stay, but I am giving him another week or two to see if things change. soooooo after school resumes next month we will see if he will end up at home or staying in school. Until then Logan is doing great and I am still happy with the choice I made to take him out.

Again thanks for all your answers, it really helped! and ylleknna, not butting in, I appreciate your input too, it put things into perspective for me

Re: How many hours do you work with your kids daily? (homeschooling)

Sorry I didn't get around to responding until now. I was actually gonna post a thread and ask how your homeschooling was going.

With Harold I'm doing good if he wants to sit down for an hour. He really does love that Starfall site and he likes to paint and colour, etc. I have been doing the "hardcore learning" for about 20 mins in the morning, 20 mins right before his nap and then 20 mins or so in the evening. I was getting worried that he wasn't up to it yet and really wasn't responding that well but then all of a sudden the last 2 weeks or so he has just exploded in vocabulary, learning his letters, etc.

We were just playing around in the reading section of the Starfall site so he could see different pictures and stuff. I wasn't ACTUALLY attempting to teach him how to read yet cause he's only 2 but I figured it would be fun for him to look at the lessons in that section.

Anyway, he was sitting on the counter the other night helping me make dinner. The fish sticks bag was on the counter and he just out of the blue starts sounding out the letters for "fish". Then he kept doing it over and over a little bit faster until he actually read "FISH". I was completely floored. Then he proceeded to do the same with the word "sticks" until he read the whole title "Fish Sticks". I seriously almost swallowed my tongue I was so shocked.

All that work/playing around that I've been doing with him was actually sinking in and my 2 year old is starting to read!

I guess the point to all of this blathering is to let you know that they will learn at their own pace and even when you are just "playing" with them they are learning. The great thing about Homeschooling is if they get tired of the sit down structured learning you can let them go do something else for a while and still technically be teaching them.

If you let them guide their learning structure they won't get bored or irritated and they can soak up so much more. They tell you in management classes and teaching classes that a person is only alert and soaking in the content for 20 mins at a time during any type of training session and then they have to have a mental break for about 15 to 30 mins or so. Otherwise their brain shuts down and they become bored and stop learning.

Ok anyway, I think you are doing great and if you need anything just PM me cause I always forget this forum is here so I don't always check it like I should.

Re: How many hours do you work with your kids daily? (homeschooling)

I'm coming in late to this but I'd also agree that 4 hrs for pre-k is a lot. I see that you've since lowered that time. My 3rd grader usually spends 2-3 hrs a day just to give you a reference and she is on an advanced track with more intense reading and higher mathematics. Now if she lolly gags it takes her much longer!

I'm glad to hear it helped. Anything we can all do to help each other out and make homeschooling go smoothly for everyone is a major feat if you ask me.

Re: How many hours do you work with your kids daily? (homeschooling)

does anyone have a preference on study guides? i have been playing with the idea of using abeka as it seems to be the most advanced, but have also looked into alpha omega.....any other suggestions? i will also have my grandbabies coming up soon for schooling (twins a are 2 and twins b are 2 mth. and a new coming in may), so as you can see i will need as much advice as possible or experience....i used to teach in the public school system, so the teaching aspect doesn't really bother me as much, as the school programs that are confusing me, as i want the best program i can get....thanks for being so nice and helpful with the posts....

Re: How many hours do you work with your kids daily? (homeschooling)

Here is a link one of the most helpful websites about Homeschooling I have found. (I actually stumbled across it when I wasn doing a paper for one of my internet college classese.)

This site can help you figure out which study guide is best for you and your children. A to Z Homeschooling I hope this helps you out.
