What curriculum do you use and why?

Hi there. I have tried twice to homeschool my DS with no success. Each time I gave in and sent him back to public school. I would really love to teach him at home. I now know that I have lots of weaknesses when it comes to this. I have a hard time sticking to the schedule and therefore HE has a hard time sticking to the schedule.

So, I am wondering what curriculum you are using and why you chose that particular curriculum. I know that each child is different and learns differently, but to have some idea of where to go from here would help.
My DS is 12 years old and in the 7th grade. In the past we have tried several different programs with no luck. Any advice would be appreciated..THANKS!

Re: What curriculum do you use and why?

I don't have a set curriculum yet as my boys are 2 years and 8 mos old. But I was homeschooled as a kid from 5th to HS graduation. You don't necessarily have to have a set schedule so if you aren't a schedule type person and neither is your child then change the way you teach.

The free-style method of homeschooling is really awesome because they are actually being taught and learning all of the time instead of a set amount of hours a day. Here is a website that I use for all kinds of resource materials and ways to better obtain my son's attention while teaching him. http://homeschooling.gomilpitas.com/

There is so much information on that site. If you need anything or just have a question about something send me a PM.

Re: What curriculum do you use and why?

We use Sonlight and We've used it the past 3 yrs (1st-3rd grade.) The lesson plan (but you can tailor it to your's and your child's needs) is set for you in a 4 or 5 day format a little more structured than the free method of homescholing. I'm very pleased with the high level materials they provide and what my child is walking away with each year from her education. I also chose Sonlight because it is a Christian format and brings Christ into all aspects...history, science, etc... Being as young as she is we've already studied World History for 2 years and have begun our first year studying American History this year.

I hope the best for you as you search for something to work for you and your family.

Re: What curriculum do you use and why?

my son is 12 and in the 7th grade, well we just completed his 7th grade year.we use abeka ,hes done very well with it. it is a christian based curriculum.you can either use a regular homeschool method or a dvd accredted method.the program works well for us and you can make your own schedule or follow the one they suggest.

Re: What curriculum do you use and why?

Good luck, I don't have any advice for curriculum other than what I know with a master of ed degree- your son is old enough to tell you what he is interested in and what will work for him, too. Maybe if both of you write a list of what you want to do, what he wants to learn, what you want him to learn, all of those sorts of things- and then have a formal meeting and discuss with him these things. He might need a little push to really see you as the teacher, since he is so used to seeing you as Mom. =) Kwim? So if you make it formal to begin with, and set some meetings to organize yourselves- get a big calendar and make sure to use it, reward yourselves once you reach little goals, that type of thing. Then you can relax a bit after time, after you get into a rhythm and figure out what exactly you want to do. You might also make his first homeschooling project a research project- scour the Internet for homeschooling resources. Online museums, lesson plans, curriculums, fun sites, things he would like to learn more about, etc. Give him a weekend to do some research and have him organize his thoughts on paper and present them to you.

That's my first thought when reading your post- just getting everything started with a bang and then going from there, working together with him and making decisions about curriculum together.

Re: What curriculum do you use and why?

We are using Connections Academy. Its based on Calvert. Its a great program, completely free, they offer so many other extra classes yet they focus on the developmental part of the childs mind as well as the educational aspect. My daughter (4th grader) is allowed to take a foreign language, many other art programs, many other history programs....its just all around great. I cant say enough about them!

Re: What curriculum do you use and why?

We just bought Sonlight as well (for some pre-k now, as well as a curriculum for next year-once my daughter turns 5). I was thrilled with the materials once I opened up my huge box of books-I want to read them all myself!! The kids can't wait and want to start it asap!!!
