Parade Magazine article
Anyone else see this in this past Sunday's paper? I know I don't need to ask for opinions! This is totally bogus!
Should Home-Schooling Be Illegal? In February, a California state appeals court ruled that unless parents have recognized teaching credentials, they must send their children to school. The judge, citing a state education law, said that parents do not have a constitutional right to home-school their children. Parents and politicians were outraged, and the court will rehear the case this month. At stake is the education of the 166,000 California children who currently are home-schooled. But the court decision also could influence laws across the country. Nationwide, up to 2 million children are taught at home. Experts estimate that the number is increasing 7% to 12% a year. If upheld, the California ruling will send shock waves nationwide, says Richard Kahlenberg, the author of a number of books on education. He says the case pits those who believe parental rights are paramount against those who place a premium on well-educated citizens. Right now, only six states have strict regulations for home-schooling, usually requiring parents to have their curriculum approved, to show test scores and, in some places, to submit to home visits. Fourteen states, including California, mandate only that parents notify the state of their decision to home-school. http://www.parade.com/articles/editi...ligence_Report

Re: Parade Magazine article
Yeah I heard about this when it came up the first time. I'm scared to death they are going to implement it. Nevada always follows suit with California on shit like this because there are a ton of Californians that have moved over here and try to make just like the place they hated and wanted to get away from. heh
Anyway, it's just ridiculous. How many times do we have to be through this? It's a proven fact that 99% of all home schooled children have a better education than public school children. The education they get is includes a lot more than what is given in public school and they their testing scores are through the roof compared to public school children's testing. So why are they constantly sending out the message that home schooled children are a bunch of illiterate morons being taught by irresponsible parents? So when are we going to start changing the name of this country to the United States Socialist Republic?

Re: Parade Magazine article
Here again I'm sure it's the few giving home schooling a bad name by pulling their children out and not educating them as they should thus they are way far behind and I'm not talking about kids who are home schooled with 'issues' that might be behind but the average student. Luckily for the time being here in Texas we are completely FREE I don't have to answer to anyone or show anyone anything on a regular basis. All they know is that I have 2 school aged children that aren't enrolled in public school and the county is getting my tax dollars woo hoo more free spending for them!

Re: Parade Magazine article
Well look at it this way, your tax dollars will help them pay off the settlements of the civil law suits from their latest fiasco with the FLDS kids. *LOL*

Re: Parade Magazine article
oooohhh DON'T get me started on that one!! Completely awful IMO... don't agree with their way of life but ripping those kids from their parents and shipping some of them HOURS away from home?! Not to mention all the funds that went into this and WILL STILL go into this thanks to all the court costs and such.....

Re: Parade Magazine article
Well and to keep on topic cause there is a freakin 500 page novel I could write on what all went wrong in that deal BUT the way they treated these kids and these mothers because they were homeschoolers is just atrocious! They tried to make it out that because they were homeschooled they were stupid and illiterate. They ordered all of these placement tests for these "poor kids that were home schooled" and then when they did the testing and found out that they were well above the average kid in that grade lvl with a few exceptions (there were a few of the children who had learning disabilities) they put in a one line blurb about it in the paper and no one heard about it again.
