Benefits of Meditation

Quote:
Maybe meditation isn't so mysterious after all. Neuroscientists have found that meditators shift their brain activity to different areas of the cortex - brain waves in the stress-prone right frontal cortex move to the calmer left frontal cortex. This mental shift decreases the negative effects of stress, mild depression and anxiety. There is also less activity in the amygdala, where the brain processes fear.
Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D., of the University of Massachusetts Medical School, recorded the brain waves of stressed-out employees of a high-tech firm in Madison, Wisconsin. The subjects were split randomly into two groups, 25 people were asked to learn meditation over eight weeks, and the remaining 16 were left alone as a control group.
All participants had their brain waves scanned three times during the study: at the beginning of the experiment, when meditation lessons were completed eight weeks later and four months after that. The researchers found that the meditators showed a pronounced shift in activity to the left frontal lobe. In other words, they were calmer and happier than before. The study will be published in the next issue of Psychosomatic Medicine.

Psychological Benefits of Meditation

Meditation can help most people feel less anxious and more in control. The awareness that meditation brings can also be a source of personal insight and self-understanding.
Handling Repressed Memories and Enjoying Life:

Dr. Borysenko notes that "meditation may lead to a breakdown of screen memories so that early childhood abuse episodes and other traumas suddenly flood the mind, making the patient temporarily more anxious until these traumas are healed. Many so-called meditation exercises are actually forms of imagery and visualization that are extraordinarily useful in healing old traumas, confronting death anxieties, finishing 'old business', learning to forgive, and enhancing self-esteem."
"Meditation frees persons from tenacious preoccupation with the past and future and allows them to fully experience life's precious moments", says Daeja Napier, founder of the Insight Meditation Center and lay dharma teacher of insight meditation in suburban Boston.
"Many men and women tend to live in a state of perpetual motion and expectation that prevents them from appreciating the gifts that each moment gives us," says Napier. "We live life in a state of insufficiency, waiting for a mother to love us, for a father to be kind to us, for the perfect job or home, for Prince Charming to come along or to become a perfect person. It's a mythology that keeps us from being whole.
"Meditation is a humble process that gently returns us to the now of our lives and allows us to wake up and re-evaluate the way that we live our lives," says Napier. "We realize that the only thing missing is mindfulness, and that's what we practice."
Depression:

Feelings of helplessness, hopelessness and isolation are hallmarks of depression-the nation's most prevalent mental health problem. Meditation increases self-confidence and feelings of connection to others. Many studies have shown that depressed people feel much better after eliciting the relaxation response.
Panic attacks:

Sometimes anxiety becomes paralyzing and people feel (wrongly) that they are about to suffer some horrible fate. Panic attacks are often treated with drugs, but studies by Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D., associate professor of medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester and director of the medical center's Stress Reduction Clinic, show that if people who are prone to panic attacks begin focused, meditative breathing the instant they feel the first signs of an episode, they are less likely to have a full-blown panic attack.

Spiritual Benefits of Meditation

The longer an individual practices meditation, the greater the likelihood that his or her goals and efforts will shift toward personal and spiritual growth. Many individuals who initially learn meditation for its self-regulatory aspects find that as their practice deepens they are drawn more and more into the realm of the "spiritual."
In her work with many cancer and AIDS patients, Dr. Borysenko has observed that many are most interested in meditation as a way of becoming more attuned to the spiritual dimension of life. She reports that many die "healed," in a state of compassionate self-awareness and self-acceptance.
Illness in general:

"It doesn't seem to matter what type of medical condition brings people to the Stress Reduction Clinic," Dr. Kabat-Zinn observes. "Over the eight-week program, they usually report a reduction in symptoms."
Many of Nature's cures - acupressure, aromatherapy, biofeedback, exercise, heat and cold therapies, massage therapy, music therapy, tai chi and chi gong, visualization, guided imagery and self-hypnosis and yoga incorporate elements of meditation.

Re: Benefits of Meditation

Really cool!

I've had some great success with biofeedback, in lowering my blood pressure. I'm sure it does something similar to meditation, in the brain. It's actually just another form of meditation, but with a bit more guidance for the biofeedback therapist.

Re: Benefits of Meditation

I LOVE meditation and try to do it every day for 20 minutes. It's one of the best parts of my day and is so great for recharging! It can actually be really fun too if you get good at it!

I know I'm not! I get too distracted. I do better at biofeedback, which gives you little 'projects' to do, while you're meditating.

Re: Benefits of Meditation

I guess instead of saying "getting good at it" I should have said "when you start to improve." For me there are days when I'm too distracted to meditate, so I journal to try to get all of those jumbled up thoughts out of my head...literally. Then there are days when I'm so in sync with the universe that I can totally feel that chi or source energy flowing right through me. Those are the days when I can close my eyes and clear my mind and breathe deeply until my whole body disappears (goes numb) and I literally feel like I'm doing somersaults in space. It's a REALLY cool sensation. I know that's not the "goal" of meditation but it sure feels good to just release my body and free my spirit for a few minutes. Okay, well I'm off to go meditate...I'll be back in a bit.

Re: Benefits of Meditation

Not at all. I did chuckle a little at the wording, but it's true, really. I like to put forth that whatever we do in terms of destressing and managing our health is good and worth doing and I think there are several avenues to a place of freedom from physical sensation, but I agree with you that in order to realize the best benefits of meditation we do need to pay some attention to form and function along the way. There is a certain amount of 'getting good' to be done, and making the meditative mindset more and more part of one's daily waking walking life.

Re: Benefits of Meditation

I had a biofeedback session today and my therapist commented about how I "faded". Meaning I was not quite asleep, but just barely awake. She can tell by the electrodes that are attached to my forehead and the reading it puts out. Anyway, I did feel like I was not in my body. Like I wasn't even really in the room. It is really cool.

I don't know where I went, but I remember coming back and hearing the tape, playing in the headphones, and realizing that I hadn't heard it for a little while. I felt so aware and so relaxed, at the same time.

Re: Benefits of Meditation

I just wanted to clarify for anyone new to meditation that the "out of body" feeling isn't the goal. It's just a cool side effect. But you can't try to push ALL thoughts out of your head...just the ones coming from your ego or "normal mindset." Push away those "what am I going to make for dinner? do I look fat today?" You know that constant stream of crap flowing in and out of your head all day. When you can learn to quiet those thoughts, you are able to open yourself up to higher insight. You'll get inspired ideas from a "higher place" (the voice of God if you are a believer) if you just sit and listen. It doesn't happen every time (for me anyway) but it does happen. That's one of the reasons I try to journal after every session of meditation because your mind connects with that higher source and sometimes fills you with great ideas or insight. At the very least, my practice always serves to improve my mood...and as someone who used to struggle with depression, that in itself is an awesome benefit!
