Re: Benefits of Meditation
Really cool!
I've had some great success with biofeedback, in lowering my blood pressure. I'm sure it does something similar to meditation, in the brain. It's actually just another form of meditation, but with a bit more guidance for the biofeedback therapist. |

Re: Benefits of Meditation
I LOVE meditation and try to do it every day for 20 minutes. It's one of the best parts of my day and is so great for recharging! It can actually be really fun too if you get good at it!

Let's talk about what it means to be good at meditation.

Re: Benefits of Meditation
What I'm getting at is, first, how would y'all define what constitutes meditation?

Re: Benefits of Meditation
I guess instead of saying "getting good at it" I should have said "when you start to improve." For me there are days when I'm too distracted to meditate, so I journal to try to get all of those jumbled up thoughts out of my head...literally. Then there are days when I'm so in sync with the universe that I can totally feel that chi or source energy flowing right through me. Those are the days when I can close my eyes and clear my mind and breathe deeply until my whole body disappears (goes numb) and I literally feel like I'm doing somersaults in space. It's a REALLY cool sensation. I know that's not the "goal" of meditation but it sure feels good to just release my body and free my spirit for a few minutes. Okay, well I'm off to go meditate...I'll be back in a bit.

Re: Benefits of Meditation
Not at all. I did chuckle a little at the wording, but it's true, really. I like to put forth that whatever we do in terms of destressing and managing our health is good and worth doing and I think there are several avenues to a place of freedom from physical sensation, but I agree with you that in order to realize the best benefits of meditation we do need to pay some attention to form and function along the way. There is a certain amount of 'getting good' to be done, and making the meditative mindset more and more part of one's daily waking walking life.

Re: Benefits of Meditation
I had a biofeedback session today and my therapist commented about how I "faded". Meaning I was not quite asleep, but just barely awake. She can tell by the electrodes that are attached to my forehead and the reading it puts out. Anyway, I did feel like I was not in my body. Like I wasn't even really in the room. It is really cool.
I don't know where I went, but I remember coming back and hearing the tape, playing in the headphones, and realizing that I hadn't heard it for a little while. I felt so aware and so relaxed, at the same time. |

Re: Benefits of Meditation
I just wanted to clarify for anyone new to meditation that the "out of body" feeling isn't the goal. It's just a cool side effect. But you can't try to push ALL thoughts out of your head...just the ones coming from your ego or "normal mindset." Push away those "what am I going to make for dinner? do I look fat today?" You know that constant stream of crap flowing in and out of your head all day. When you can learn to quiet those thoughts, you are able to open yourself up to higher insight. You'll get inspired ideas from a "higher place" (the voice of God if you are a believer) if you just sit and listen. It doesn't happen every time (for me anyway) but it does happen. That's one of the reasons I try to journal after every session of meditation because your mind connects with that higher source and sometimes fills you with great ideas or insight. At the very least, my practice always serves to improve my mood...and as someone who used to struggle with depression, that in itself is an awesome benefit!
