I need some pointers on birthday pics--blowing out candles
Can anyone give pointers on taking good birthday candle pictures? This is one thing I always intend to figure out before the birthday, but I get busy with all the other preparations and never have time to figure it out. So I'm asking for pointers NOW before the next birthday comes up.
Here's a pretty awful picture from my niece's birthday this weekend. I was the "designated photographer" for my BIL, and I didn't want to miss the moment or mess it up totally, so I chickened out and just left everything on auto. Lights were off. I would have liked to take one without flash, but was afraid to, because she was moving soooo fast I couldn't get a focus as it was. It fell on the cake (she actually had two because there were lots of people) instead of her--boo hoo. If I were to do it over again and actually use manual settings, what could I do to get a great picture instead of a stinky one. (On a bright note, my pinata pictures turned out loverly at least!)

if you look at the photo, your focus fell on the cake.
What camera are you using? |

Re: I need some pointers on birthday pics--blowing out candles
Yes, I knew the focus fell on the cake. I just got a an xTi last week and am still figuring it out. I didn't have the manual with me, and couldn't remember how to change the metering on the spot. I need to spend more time with it. I thought I posted the data, but it didn't come out. I will go back and get it from photobucket....

Re: I need some pointers on birthday pics--blowing out candles
Thanks, I was just mostly wondering what camera you had, it is difficult (for me at least) to comment when I don't know what camera is behind the photo as I am a nikon gal and don't know much about operating a cannon.
I just had two birthdays here - and I got a few when blowing out candles, what I did in manual mode with a SB800 external flash, is set the settings to the following: ISO 200 SS 250 *varied depending on light F/ ?? this usually varies for me, but I try to keep it between 4-7 ish, this allows for a larger focal area (ie: more of your photo in focus) SB800 - settings vary based upon light available I hope that this helps. |

Re: I need some pointers on birthday pics--blowing out candles
This is really tricky. I tried it last year, inside, my DD blowing out candles. Of course if I metered for her face, the candles were over-exposed. So I guess you have to compromise a little. I'm not sure of a better way. This year I was going to try metering for her face then to compensate for the candles, under-expose by -0.7-1 stop.
You are confusing yourself with what metering mode is for. Changing your metering mode will not affect your focus. You can read here about metering modes http://www.dpreview.com/learn/?/key=metering Check out the 2 page thread that Keagsmommy posted for help with your focus
