My LO is a genius!
We have been teaching my DS some sign language, and he has been picking up on it really well. He uses about 12-13 signs. About 6 months a go, he became obsessed with "ITsy Bitsy Spider". To ask us to sing it again, he would put his two pointer fingers together. I figured it was because of the motions to the song. HE made up a sign for spider w/o any direction from us.
Well this weekend he made up another sign. I lotion his entire body twice a day (eczema issues). On SUnday, when I was getting ready to "greese" him up, he started rubbing his arm with one hand. I thought that it was an isolated incident, but he did it again that night. Now he does it every time, and he is now asking for it by using the sign he made up himself. He also made made up the sign for phone. We have never shown him the sign for phone but it very clsoe to the actaul sign. While I was talking on it yesterday, he walked up to me and put his little fist next to his ear. Everytime the phone rings or he sees somebody on it he uses the sign. He is also unzipping his sleepers by himself, but he can't figure out how to zip them back up. Do I have a brillant child, or am I blinded by love??? LOL

Re: My LO is a genius!
Definetely a brilliant child!
We started teaching Katie sign language when she was about 6 months - she didn't really catch on until she was 9 months. She uses it all the time! I love it when people ask me "What's wrong with her?" when I use it or she uses it. DUH! NOTHING!!! She's just smarter than you!

Re: My LO is a genius!
Aww, how cute! It's so much fun when they start communicating. My oldest dd made up a sign for Grandma. It was putting a finger in the palm of her hand because that's the way my mom did "mark it with a b" when she did Pat-A-Cake, but I always do the mark it with a b by poking the baby's nose. We figured out she was doing this sign for Grandma a couple of weeks after her first birthday, and realized when looking back at the proofs from her one year portraits that she had been doing it during the photography session too (my mom had come along to help), as one picture showed her looking off in the direction my mom was standing while making the sign. She used the sign every time she saw my mom or anyone mentioned her until she could say a word for Grandma at about 16 months, then for a while she used both the word and the sign. It was really sweet! She also started asking for her sometimes when Grandma wasn't around. I think the way kids pick up language is really amazing.

Re: My LO is a genius!
That's so cool! I'm definitely going to try to teach my next baby signing. I thought it was silly this time around but I really regret it now because DS gets so frustrated when he can't tell us what he wants. You have brilliant kiddos!

Re: My LO is a genius!
He is a brilliant little guy. Isn't it great that they can figure out signs all on their own? My daughter made up a sign for moon when she was seventeen months. She would draw a circle above her head with her finger. I had her evaluated at two for delayed speech and they were shocked that she knew the right sign. They were even more shocked when I told them she made it up herself. Keep that little man signing... it does boost brain cells!

Re: My LO is a genius!
Hey thanks.....since I am bragging I want to share more (if I didn;t share this Dh would be pretty mad at me, LOL)
We taught ds the sign for poop. He uses it to tell us when he has already pooped and wants us to change his diaper. We were sitting watching TV and ELijah was playing with his books. He stands up, turns around and then does the sign for poop. Then he squats and poops. He told us that he had to poop before he did it. We were stunned. I know I am shameless bragger, but this is the 1st bragging thread I have ever done. I am so proud of my boy!

Brag away! I love hearing mommies dote about their kids! I'm guilty as well, lol! My whole family is so impressed by Cooper communicating with signs whenever they make a big deal about it I'm so overcome with pride!
