It's gorgeous and the foyer is almost EXACTLY like the funeral home in Six Feet Under on HBO. i don't know if you ever watched that show, but my husband and I loved it.
I really hope this works for you, Jonda. I can see your family being very happy living in such a lovely place.
We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battlefield and patriot grave to every living heart and hearthstone all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.

beautiful jonda! very warm, welcoming and peaceful.

Yes, we would live upstairs. Like a scene right out of My Girl! We would plan to make the entire place our home. Using the parlor area as the place where we would meet with families and as a second family room. There is another room downstairs that we would make into a playroom for Jack and any of the children that come to funerals would have a place to play and be free from the sadness for a while. We would also use the dining room as our dining room and it would double as the family lounge. The only place that would be off limits to the family for the most part would be the kitchen. We might change our stance on that but we will see! I am very territorial about my kitchen.
Oh and here is our latest idea! I am a great cook (if I do say so myself) and am very well known for my cookies and Caramel Pecan Rolls (won a blue ribbon for my rolls at the county fair). When families come to do the arraignments for a funeral, DH will be the funeral director and I will be the hostess. We want to do this very personal and old school. When they walk in we want the home to smell of freshly baking cookies or rolls. Then after the family sits down I will come out with fresh baked stuff and coffee, water etc. That way they feel like they are in our home not a funeral home. We are also working on an after care idea that would involve going to the families house afterwards with a casserole, that would give us an opportunity to see how they are doing and to really build a reputation of caring in the community! I am so excited about my role in all of this! Being a hostess is what i do best!
Very nice. I hope you get it. My grandfather also ran a funeral home when I was growing up. Very interesting!
It's beautiful! Best of luck to you guys (and I liked your disclaimer)

Jonda- just read your post about the hostess. It sounds wonderful!![]()
Jonda- When I opened it and saw the view down the stairs I immediately thought of "MY Girl". It is wonderful! Just gorgeous and I think your hostess idea and making it a family feel is the best idea I have ever heard! That is exactly what I would want if I had a loved one pass away.
Jonda, its just lovely. All the woodwork is fabulous. I love mission style furnishings and they really compliment the architecture of this home. I am ****SO**** excited that you will be able to use your gifts as a help and compliment to your husband's gifts. What a nice way to complete each other.

Jonda, the place is beautiful. I love the idea of making it like a home so people don't feel out of sorts or creepy (sorry if that's insulting because in no way do I mean to insult you). What better way to help a family cope than make them feel normal in their time of sorrow. I love the after care idea as well. All that attention to detail will definitely get you guys a wonderful reputation in the community. I just really think you guys will be well received because of your thought to the feelings of the family and checking in on them after your business with them is done.
I don't really know how it works, so forgive me if this is a stupid question, but do you guys do the embalming, etc. on site and if so, is there a concern about the chemicals and a family living on site?
ITA with the 'My Girl' reference, that was my 1st thought! I think it's beautiful Jonda, very inviting!
No you did not insult me! I know exactly what you mean!
Yes, my Dh will do all the embalming on site. There are no concerns with a family living on site b/c of all the precautions that are followed. We follow strict OSHA guidelines and everything is kept and done in a room that is kept locked and away from others.
I never thought I would say a funeral home is beautiful, that sort of thing freaks me out LOL but that one truly is lovely. I really adore all that beautiful word work. I hope you guys get it.
