How to thank a soldier?

This question goes out to all our military wives and servicemen/women out there. I am so eternally grateful to all of the sacrifices you are all making for our country. Whenever I see a soldier in uniform I always want to run up to them and just say "Thank you for your service. I really appreciate it." Is that appropriate? If you were walking around in uniform would you welcome such an intrusion or would it annoy you? I saw a man in military uniform the other day picking up his daughter at daycare and I really wanted to thank him but I wasn't sure if that was rude to bother him. What are your thoughts?

Re: How to thank a soldier?

Cara I have a lump in my throat reading through your post. I would think that the majority of Military Men and Women would welcome your Thanks. I know my DH would. Sometimes their job is thankless and not recognized so I know they would appreciate the recognition. I also agree with Jill it is nice when you are told that you are doing a good job and thanked.
As a military wife I really appreciate all of the support I have gotten on this board. You recognize the sacrafices that our families make, you give us prayers when they are needed, you lend an ear when we are so frustrated, tired and sad. So thank you to all who have been there for us.

Re: How to thank a soldier?

Aw, thanks girls and I really mean THANK YOU! I'm kicking myself now for being shy and not telling the serviceman (is that even the right word? soldier?) how thankful I am. Well hopefully I'll see him again. And next time I see another person in military dress I WILL go up and say THANK YOU!

Re: How to thank a soldier?

I totally agree with Jill and Leigh. If someone came up and thanked my husband, I would probably cry! I also agree with Leigh about the support I've received from this board when I vented recently...I really appreciate the support and thank you!

Re: How to thank a soldier?

Cara i'm with you, I am always saying thank you to our men and women in service. Heck even when I see the local fire fighters grocery shopping I always say thank you. Because when it comes down to it, they are the ones risking their own lives. They are the ones in that split second, who make the choice to run into a burning building. Sometimes they shrug it off, like "well thats my job" but someday they could be saving my little ones.

Re: How to thank a soldier?

I too appreciate all of the sacrifices our servicemen, servicewomen and their families make everyday.

Here is a link to a site I have used before that sends postage paid postcards overseas with your message.
