Fogging done at Phoenix Zoo after positive West Nile virus test

PHOENIX (AP) -- Contractors fogged the Phoenix Zoo after preliminary tests showed mosquitoes there have tested positive for the West Nile virus.

Maricopa County and zoo officials decline comment, pending the results of a secondary tests.

The City of Phoenix' emergency management coordinator says up to 15 percent of initial positive tests prove false.

Results from the secondary tests from mosquitoes trapped at the zoo are expected by tomorrow.

Phoenix officials stressed that the mosquitoes that carry the virus are nocturnal and are unlikely to bother daytime visitors.

My fellow Zonies: Please just be extra cautious when it comes to mosquitoes. I am paranoid, I know at least me and DD will be covered in OFF for a few days.

Hey that's scary...I will have to ask my BIL about that since he's a keeper there.

Eve has already been getting a couple of bites these past few nights...the mosquitoes love her for some reason. They never bite me or Violet!!

No problem, when I saw this on the news website I knew I needed to pass it along.

Re: Fogging done at Phoenix Zoo after positive West Nile virus test

i live in southern la, so it's a concern all year round here. We have sprayers that come through the neighbor hoods a couple times a month. squito control is a HUGE deal down here since we have so many. I tend to not go out at night in the summer because of the squitos. i run to the car and run back. It's not that i am afraid of west nile, it's that i cant stand the itch!

Re: Fogging done at Phoenix Zoo after positive West Nile virus test

They just said on the news that after further testing they have discovered it was a false positive and there was really no West Nile Virus at the Phoenix Zoo.

Re: Fogging done at Phoenix Zoo after positive West Nile virus test

Amanda I got the scoop on this from my BIL. He said that the mosquito that tested positive was taken from the equine area, and they had recently vaccinated the horses for West Nile, and that is why one of the mosquitoes tested a false positive. He also said the testing was supposed to be confidential, but it got leaked out to the media.
